GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work that gets a brand's information and content used as a source — and named correctly — in the answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews.
Let us answer the headline question straight away: no, SEO is not dead. This article does not sell a doomsday story; it separates where the two disciplines are the same and where they differ. GEO does not replace search engine optimisation, it sits on top of it. You cannot build GEO on a bad SEO foundation: what AI systems summarise is largely content already crawlable, reachable and trustworthy on the web.
The claim spread fast for an understandable reason: user behaviour did change. Reading a written answer and being done with it, instead of opening ten blue links one by one, has become common. What changed is not the existence of search but where the answer gets consumed. Below: what that means, what stays the same, what is genuinely new.
What is GEO and what does it optimise?
Classic SEO optimises a result list: the goal is for your page to sit as high as possible on a given query. GEO optimises an answer text: the goal is for your information, your brand or your source to appear inside the paragraph the model writes when the user asks.
So in GEO you are not competing for a position but for a sentence. The model pulls from a handful of sources while writing; either you are in that mix or you are not. There is no in-between state such as "showing up seventh".
The term spread from 2023 onward and the field is still maturing, so it is healthier to describe it through observable mechanisms than exaggerated certainty: how AI systems find content, what they can read, what they trust.
Where an AI engine parts ways with a search engine
To the user both look like "ask a question, get an answer", but the machinery separates at three points.
- The shape of the output. A search engine returns ranked links and the user decides. A generative engine reads sources and writes one synthesised answer; the system has largely done the choosing.
- The shape of the question. People type two or three words into a search box. To an assistant they write a full sentence, supply context and follow up. That shifts weight toward long-tail queries with clear intent.
- How the source gets picked. Search engines rank at page level. A generative system uses not the whole page but the passage that answers the question. One well-written paragraph can carry an average page into the answer; a strong but disorganised page may never be used.
From "ranking" to "being cited": what changes?
SEO's vocabulary is built around rank: position, impressions, click-through rate. Most of it has no equivalent in GEO. The concept that takes its place is citation: your brand or content being named in the answer, shown as a source, or listed among the recommended options.
Three concrete consequences:
- The unit is the paragraph, not the page. Content has to be made of sections that keep their meaning when copied out alone. That is why crisp definitions, question-shaped headings and tables work.
- Success becomes binary. You are in the answer or you are not. Progress gets harder to measure; rank tracking gives way to asking the same questions on different platforms at intervals and recording whether your brand name came up.
- Accuracy matters as much as visibility. A model can name you and get the facts wrong: a closed branch shown as open, a service you do not offer attributed to you. SEO has no such risk category; in GEO it needs regular auditing.
Is SEO dead? Let us answer honestly
No — and the reasons the claim is wrong are concrete.
First, what generative systems lean on for current information is still the web. If a page cannot be crawled, returns empty HTML, or is linked from nowhere, the model has no route to it. Indexability is GEO's precondition.
Second, part of the AI answers run on top of search infrastructure. The summaries at the top of the results page are fed by the same index and largely the same quality signals. Sites strong in classic search keep much of their chance of appearing there.
Third, not every search goes to an assistant. Brand name searches, map queries, "near me" searches and much of the traffic carrying direct purchase intent still move through classic search.
If anything died it is a subset of SEO: thin content repackaging known information, pages built on keyword repetition, reporting whose only metric is rank. Their value was eroding already; generative search sped it up.

Whichever label these get invoiced under, they work on both sides:
- Crawlability and indexability. A page that will not open at its own URL, or returns no content, is invisible to every system.
- Structured data. Schema.org markup earns rich results in search; on the generative side it lets a machine read the brand, service and location without error.
- Content carrying real expertise. Shallow, self-repeating text is worthless on both sides.
- Authority and consistency. Identical name, address, service scope and contact details everywhere is decisive for both ranking and model trust.
- Page speed. A slow page loses the user, and the crawler does an incomplete job.

Work unique to GEO, with no SEO equivalent
The shared base is wide, but a genuinely separate area exists:
- Open access for AI crawlers. Making sure agents such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot are not blocked at
robots.txtlevel, and are not silently blocked at the server or CDN layer. - Helper files for machine reading. Files such as
llms.txtsummarising the site's structure and key pages in plain text. They bring no visibility on their own; they ease access and comprehension. - Citable content architecture. Each section answering a question directly, definitions in one sentence, comparisons in tables.
- Answer auditing. Regularly checking what models say about your brand, and tracing wrong information back to its source.
- Mention tracking. The routine that replaces rank tracking: running the same question set across platforms and recording the result.

Who is it urgent for, and who is it early for?
GEO is not equally urgent for every business. Priority depends largely on how the customer decides.
Urgent: services researched at length before purchase — consulting, legal, clinics and healthcare, B2B software, education. Here "which one suits me" and "what is the difference" now often go to an AI assistant. Comparison-heavy ecommerce categories belong here too.
Still early: businesses whose site is not indexed, that have no content, or whose technical infrastructure is broken. The first money goes to the foundation, not GEO. Three false claims you hear often about GEO
"GEO has replaced SEO." It has not. Generative systems are fed by the indexed web, and classic search still carries a significant share of queries.
"Add one file and the AI will recommend you." No such shortcut exists. llms.txt or schema markup improves access and readability; to be recommended there has to be something worth recommending and verifiable authority behind it.
"Results in GEO can be guaranteed." They cannot. Generative output is not deterministic; the same question can give different answers at different times. Treat offers guaranteeing a mention on a given platform on a given date with caution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GEO a real discipline or a marketing term?
Both, partly. The technical reality is concrete: generative systems find, read and select content differently, and that requires separate decisions on content and infrastructure. But because most of the work overlaps with classic SEO, accounts positioning GEO as a fully independent service are overstated. The right frame is GEO as a layer on top of SEO.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
Close, but not identical. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses more on surfacing a single short answer — featured snippets and voice assistant replies. GEO covers generative systems where the model rewrites the answer and blends several sources. In practice the content discipline the two demand overlaps heavily.
Does appearing in AI answers reduce my site's traffic?
On some informational queries it can, because the user may read the answer and never come to the site. In return, being named produces value in brand awareness and trust; a user talking to an assistant usually still heads to the brand's site at the decision stage. The right response is to track mentions and qualified visits together rather than click counts alone.
Can the work I do for GEO damage my Google rankings?
No. Almost everything within GEO — clean HTML, structured data, a clear heading structure, accurate information — is what search engines expect too. Damage appears only if content is made artificial for the sake of being cited, sentences are repeated, or pages are padded out with question templates. The measure is that the text stays readable for a human.
My site is new; should I wait to appear on Google before starting GEO?
You do not need to wait, but you do need the order right. Most first-stage work — an indexable page structure, schema, accurate brand information, content that answers real questions — already serves both sides. A separate GEO budget makes sense only once a body of content worth summarising has accumulated.
